Stop Laying In Bed
"An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion. – Newton's First Law of Motion
This is one of my habits I need to stop doing.
Being comfortable.
Snug underneath the doona.
Turning my brain off as I watch long-from YouTube videos, or doom-scroll on YouTube shorts.
How To Feel Alert
A long time ago I heard from either Jordan Peterson or Andrew Huberman that having a straight back has a biological effect to your alertness.
Let's apply this concept to doing work.
If you are relaxed, you're not inclined to get work done.
You're whining down.
Back straight?
You're ready.
Alert for possible danger, in the primitive sense.
Not only will your posture effect your internal state. But also the environment you work in as well.
Environment Forces Action
Famous comedy writer Jerry Seinfeld had a writing ritual.
He gave himself two hours everyday to sit in front of his desk with a pen and paper.
Only two things he was allowed to do: write or sit there bored.
He's allowed to do nothing. But he couldn't do anything that wasn't writing jokes.
What happens is he gets bored, chooses to write a bit, then eventually gets into a flow.
Back to laying down in bed...
What are the chances if I laid down that I would produce my best work?
So, What Am I Doing About It?
Having a permanent workstation at my desk.
Turning off notifications on my phone.
If I feel bored, rather than retreating and laying down on my bed I'll sit on my desk chair.
That way, even if I watch YouTube at my desk, it's way easier to switch to work because I don't have to get up.
(You might be reading to how ridiculous it sounds. Humans have a proclivity for laziness. And that's out of energy conservation.)
