Who Am I?

You might be asking,

"Who the hell is Denzil Duke? And what's his story about?"

I'm a 19 year old digital creator wanting to break into the digital marketing industry.

The founder of a marketing recruitment agency said this to me:

"The first job will always be the hardest."

I refuse to go to university for marketing. Most of the stuff I've learnt on the internet and books. In the meantime, I'm helping small businesses improve their marketing.

Think of it as vocational education, rather than a tertiary one.

"The best teacher is the market."

Why The Digital Marketing Industry?

I'm going to blunt and simple. Here's three reasons why I want to break into the marketing industry

  1. Making Myself And The Company I Work For Sh*t Tonnes Of Money

Let's not beat around the bush. People like us who go into sales and marketing want to make an impact. And, get paid handsomely for it.

By helping businesses market better, get more leads, and make more money, I don't see anything wrong for getting paid to provide VALUE.

  1. I Get To Create Stuff

My creative journey probably started in primary school learning cello and public speaking. Later, I started creating videos and articles on my website around high school. This carried over to now freelancing.

Marketing allows people to be creative. In an effort to do two things, attract prospects and communicate value.

  1. Seeing The Numbers

Two things people don't usually pare up: creativity and numbers.

At heart, I'm a businessman. Numbers help businesses move forward. Whether it's CPM, CTR, CAC, LTV, etc.

(I'm intentionally leaving those marketing terms as abbreviations)

In our line of work, the creative affects the logical. Seeing the numbers change because of creativity is what really gets me going.

Case Study: Denzil Duke - Personal Brand

Purpose Of The Brand

Share my lessons and experiences to an audience of young people aged 18-30 in topics that I'm actively interested in: digital marketing, sales, social skills, piano, learning Japanese, life.

Although, it's broad in terms of content, I'm building an audience who are loyal DUE to the overlap of different niches.

As Naval Ravikant said on the Joe Rogan Experience,

"I think the reason why people like hearing me is because it’s like if you go to a circus and you see a bear, right? That’s kind of interesting but not that much. If you see a unicycle, that’s interesting. But you see a bear on a unicycle, that’s really interesting, right? So, when you combine things you’re not supposed to combine — people get interested."

I also said to myself,

"If I was to die tomorrow, I'd be pretty bummed out that I couldn't share my lessons for others to learn from me."

I have not made any monetary return on my investment. I am still 18 years young, and I do not want to ruin the goodwill I have been building with my audience and community.

As Gary Vee once said,

"Jab, jab, jab, right hook. Give, give give, ask."

This whole project is learning how to provide free value to an audience who want to educate and better themselves. Like me, because I believe in life-long learning.

Also, I'm new to the game of digital marketing. I value the input of my work rather than the results and output.

Brand's Mapping

Denzil Duke the personal brand. Kaizen Club, my online community, an extension of the personal brand.

My Website

Desktop Homepage

Conceptualised in late 2023. My first article published in January 2024.

Objectives

Learn how to:

  1. Set up a website
  2. Connect a domain to a website
  3. Use Google products: Search Console, Google Analytics and Google Tags Manager
  4. Learn written content creation
  5. Do basic SEO

Strategy

Articles all responsive to different devices

Post consistently an one article per week to supplement audiences who like my content in a written format.

In terms of SEO planning, I haven't done keyword research to find what topics will bring my page to the top of the SERP. Just discuss topics that I have first hand experience and aligns with the personal brand +

Generally, I try titling the article titles to make them want to click it. Then, hooking them in the first couple sentences of the article.

My most recent article 'My Most Important Lesson After Travelling To Brisbane', is a perfect example of hooking the audience with curiosity, but retaining them by organising ideas into a list.

My YouTube Channel

YouTube Channel Front Page

Also, conceptualised in late 2023. The YouTube channel has become the main funnel for attracting attention to the personal brand.

Objectives

Learn how to:

  1. Write intriguing titles
  2. Write video scripts
  3. Hook the audience within the first 30 seconds
  4. Record videos and audio
  5. Edit videos on Wondershare Filmora

Strategy

I aim to upload once a week. Every Monday 6AM AEST at the same time as my article.

How I upload content on both channels is using content repurposing. I will write an article as if it was a video script, then edit to fit the format. For example, changing 'in this article' to 'in this video'.

Essentially, I'm uploading an article version and video version of the same piece of content.

Measuring Metrics

I originally used views as the main metric for whether or not my content marketing was doing well.

However, after watching this video by Alex Hormozi:

How I Gained 7.8 Million Followers In 40 Months (6 Key Lessons)
Want to scale your business? (Free Courses): https://www.acquisition.com/trainingWant to start a business? (Start Free): https://www.skool.com/games/about?ut…

I have changed how I title and script my videos.

Instead of trying to be 'click-baity' and tugging on the viewer's curiosity, I will actually title the video for what is actually inside the video. Also, doing my thumbnails that make sense for the topic.

I would use Ad Revenue as my metric, as Hormozi explains, the Ad Revenue directly correlated with the quality customers that were attracted by the content.

But, I don't qualify not having 1k subscribers or 4k hours of watch time.

However, my retention rate on my newest video,

18 Year Old Learns Why He Should Move To The City
If you want to decide whether or not to move out of your parent’s house, watch this video.I’m from Townsville, Australia(120k Population) and went to Brisban…

It had an additional 54 seconds in view duration compared to the channel average.

Comparison of View Duration And Other Metrics Between Videos

Hormozi explains the nature of education content will be much smaller due to being so niched. Entertainment content garners more views as it's applicable to everyone compared to a specific subject matter on a topic.

Hence, why I haven't leaned into shorter form content due to the nature of my product. Funnelling people into my online educational community on the platform Skool.
